Programs for seniors over 65 with disabilities
Over 300 seniors at 7 senior citizen centers throughout the region run and train for fun and events.

The largest non-elite wheelchair basketball league
Provided in part by Achilles
Serves over 120 young people in the South Bronx.
A more competitive wheelchair basketball team is fielded in the Northeast in which 15-20 people compete.

Training and racing at various long distance running events
Is provided for over 200 wheelchair users.
The Gunrunners, a group of atheletes who have been shot and permanently injured has been formed to raise awareness and promote the removal of guns from inner-city neighborhoods. They work out as a team and make presentations at local schools.

Training and running
On weekday evenings and weekend mornings at most chapters, serving over 5,000 people with disabilities.

Racing on weekends
At both mainstream club- and Achilles-run events throughout the United States, serving 5,000 people with disabilities.

Invitational to the nyc marathon
disabled runners worldwide
Serving 250 atheletes each year

Running for visually impaired adults
At the Jewish Guild for the Blind and throughout the world.

 

ACHILLES ALSO SUPPORTS THESE ACTIVITIES:
Provision of leg prostheses
Prostheses from the United States are fitted and donated to members in countries such as Vietnam, Bosnia, South Africa and other countries where citizens are suffering following civil strife.

Provision of wheelchairs
Sports and racing chairs are given to U.S. citizens and international atheletes.


Medical assistance
Eye exams, surgery, glasses and lenses are provided to disadvantaged members.

Research activities
Achilles obtains support, initiates and provides subjects for research into running for people with disabilities.
