Disabled Runners From All Over The World Competed Along Side Abled-Bodied Runners in The KeySpan Achilles Marathon

Thursday, May 02, 2002, New York, NY -The following are the winners to The 2nd Annual KeySpan Achilles Marathon that took place yesterday in Prospect Park.

  • Open Division, Men -Prisco Huerta, age: 34, from Brooklyn, NY, in 2:40
  • Open Division, Women -Janina Malska, age: 31, from Poland, in 2:59
  • Ambulatory Disabled, Men -Paulo Dealmeida, age: 35, from Brazil, in 3:44
  • Ambulatory Disabled, Women -Jill Schreier, age: 42, from New York, NY, in 5:07
  • Visually Disabled, Men -Mariusz Gokabek, age: 39, from Poland, in 3:13
  • Visually Disabled, Women -Olga Nazarenko, age: 53, from Canada, in 5:11
  • Push Rim Wheelchair, Men -Carlos R. Oliveira, age: 41, from Brazil, in 2:21

Despite the weather, there was still very good attendance for the Kid's Event. "The weather made it pretty tough for everyone; but when the kids got their medals, their faces were just beaming". says Rob Russo, a volunteer at the event.

Also in attendance were Adrian Benepe, Commissioner of Parks and Recreation; David Paterson, Senator; Ken Adams, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce; Ken Podzida, Commissioner of the Sports Commission; and Pam Adamo, KeySpan.

This is New York City's ONLY other accredited marathon and the city's ONLY marathon relay. Runners can either run the entire 26.2 mile course or set up teams of 4-8 people relay teams to run or walk 3.3 to 6.7 miles each. The year's sponsors include KeySpan, UnitedWay, Cushman & Wakefield and Goldman Sachs.

The Achilles Track Club is an international organization that provides training, encouragement and technical expertise to runners with all kinds of disabilities. Achilles runners may participate with crutches, wheelchairs, prostheses or without any obvious aids. The organization is dedicated to breaking down society's traditional barriers to people with disabilities through running.
